Um 23 Uhr war die Nacht vorbei. Um der Tageshitze zu entgehen, erfolgte der komplette Aufstieg im Dunkeln. Zuerst fuhren wir eine knappe Stunde bis zum Ausgangspunkt der Tour. Kurz vor ein Uhr ging es dann los, mühsam und zunehmend nervig, mehr oder weniger gerade hinauf. Eine Lavarinne führte zum Kraterrand, den wir um 6:00 erreichten. Der allgegenwärtige Schwefelgeruch zeigte an, daß der Lengai noch sehr aktiv war.

At 11 pm the night was over. To escape the heat of the day we did the whole ascent by night. It took us about one hour by car to reach the starting point of the tour. At about one o' clock we started the climb which followed a straight line up the mountain and which we found quite strenous. A lava groove lead to the rim of the crater which we reached at 6 o'clock where the ubiquitous smell of sulphur indicated that Lengai was still quite active.

Mit dem Tageslicht besserte sich auch die Stimmung. Über weißen Lavastaub, vorbei an den kleinen aktiven Kratern (Hornitos) durchquerten wir den Krater in Richtung Gipfel.

As dawn was breaking the morale of the climbers improved significantly. We crossed the crater covered with white lavadust, passed small active craters called 'hornitos' and finally made our way to the summit.

Der Gipfel wirft seinen morgendlichen Schatten über das tief im Dunst liegende Rift Valley. Nach einer ausgiebigen Gipfelrast machten wir uns wieder an den Abstieg, der glücklicherweise im Schatten lag. Den Ausgangspunkt unserer Tour erreichten wir abgekämpft aber um eine schöne Erinnerung reicher um 10 Uhr.

The summit is throwing its shadow on Masai Land and the Rift Valley. After a substantial summit rest we set off back down, luckily most parts of the descent route were lying in the shade. We arrived back at our starting point at 10 pm exhausted but with pleasant memories of a very special experience.
