Marbach: Stadtmauer - Marktstrasse - Marktplatz
Die historische Altstadt von Marbach ist außergewöhnlich gut erhalten und steht seit 1983 unter Denkmalschutz. Vier Tore führen durch die gut erhaltene Stadtmauer ins Innere der Altstadt und zur breiten Marktstraße, in der sich neben zahlreichen Geschäften auch das 1760 erbaute Rathaus befindet. Erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wurde Marbach bereits im Jahr 972, das heutige Erscheinungsbild der Altstadt geht allerdings auf den Wiederaufbau nach dem Stadtbrand im Jahr 1693 zurück.
The historic old town of Marbach is exceptionally well-preserved and listed since 1983. Four gates are leading into the center and to the wide Market Street with its frame houses, shops and the town-hall built in 1760. Marbach was firstly mentioned in the documents in 972 whereas the actual appearance of the old town goes back to the reconstruction of the town after the devastating fire of 1693.
Die Altstadt von Marbach liegt auf einer Anhöhe oberhalb des Neckars die nach Westen und Norden hin steil abfällt. Sie ist auf drei Seiten von einer, im 13. Jahrhundert erbauten Stadtmauer umgeben. Ein Graben sowie die äußere Mauer mit ihren Rondelltürmen sorgten für zusätzlichen Schutz vor allem auf der leichter zugänglichen Süd- und Ostseite.
The old town of Marbach is located on a hill above the river Neckar which is dropping down steeply in western and northern direction. It is surrounded by a town wall built in the 13th century. A ditch and a second outer wall with several defence towers was providing additional protection, especially on the easily accessible south- and east side.
Die Marktstraße führt am Rathaus vorbei zum Oberen Torturm und zum Burgplatz, wo sich früher die Stadtburg befand.
The market street passes the town hall and leads to the Upper Gate Tower and the castle square where the former castle was situated.
