The western end of the Bernina Range is called Bergell or Val Bregaglia, a valley that extends from the Como Lake up to the Maloja Pass. The granite mountains south of this valley consist of a relatively 'young' type of granite which is ideal for climbing. Piz Badile, the Sciora Massiv as well as Piz Cengalo are well known for the classic rock climbs which were mostly opened in the thirties of last century. Our starting point was the Sciora Hut where we took a short rest before we continued to climb the 'Flat Iron', a 350 m pillar in the north ridge of Pizzi Gemelli. This tour is graded V+ (alpine grading), well belayed and an excellent 'plaisir' climb.

The Pioda Ridge leads on top of Punta Pioda (3238 m), the highest peak of the Sciora Massiv. With a difference in altitude of about 1000 m and an alpine grade of VI- it is one of the longest and most demanding ridge climbs of the Bergell Area and as such requires optimal fitness and the ability to climb fast in difficult terrain. The rock has a good grip but there are only few possibilities for intermediate belays. The keys to the climb are the roof about halfway up and the two pitches below the roof with small handholds and which are often soaking wet.

In the hot summer of 2003 the granite walls of the Bergell Mountains were completely free of snow and ice. From left to right we see the North Face of Cengalo and its famous ridge of more than 1000 m and continuing to the right the North-East Face of Piz Badile. Thomas, Markus, Reinhold und Andi, members of the mountain rescue team Pfullingen (Southern Germany near Stuttgart) following the steps of their most famous member Günter Nothdurft, who climbed the Cassin Route in 3.5 hours already in 1956.

Markus and Andi climbing the first pitches of the flat iron. The climb is alpine grade V+ and very well belayed.

Like most other parties we finished the climb at the upper end of the flat iron and abseiled down the same route.

Sciora Gruppe - Piodakante

The Sciora Massiv, in the center Punta Pioda. The Pioda Ridge in its full length is best viewed from the path between Sciora Hut and the Sasc-Furä Hut.

After a thundery night at the Sciora Hut the weather was perfect again. Reinhold climbs the first rope length of the Pioda Ridge.

Third pitch of the Pioda Ridge. The stands were belayed by enormous rings so that a retreat was possible at any time and we didn't have to travers the mountain.

An exciting traverse leads to the key part of this climb: an overhang about halfway up the ridge. We reached the roof of the Pioda Ridge across water covered slabs. Could have been worse as sometimes this part of the ridge is covered with ice.

Below the summit the ridge becomes remarkably steep. While Andy and Markus climb their last pitch, Thomas is already roping down.

It took us four hours to rappel down to the foot of the ridge.
