Der westliche Alpstein
Der westliche Teil des Alpsteins ist deutlich weniger frequentiert als das Gebiet zwischen Säntis, Ebenalp und Hohem Kasten, was bestimmt kein Zeichen für mangelnde Attraktivität ist, eher für einen Mangel an Seilbahnen. Ein idyllischer Platz 500 m oberhalb der Ortschaft Alt St. Johann im Toggenburg ist der Gräppelensee, Ausgangspunkt für aussichtsreiche Wanderungen zu Neuenalpstock, Lütispitz und Stöllen.
The western part of the Alpstein massif is significantly less frequented than the area between Saentis, Ebenalp and Hoher Kasten which is definitely not due to a lack of attractivity but rather a lack of cableways. A small lake called Graeppelensee 500 m above the village of Alt St.Johann is a good basis for hikes to Neuenalpstock, Luetispitz and Stoellen.

Von Alt St.Johann im Toggenburg sind es knapp 500 Höhenmeter zum idyllisch gelegenen Gräppelensee (1307 m), wo der Sage nach noch heute ein Schatz versteckt sein soll. Wer nur zum Wandern kommt, findet hier den Ausgangspunkt für verschiedene aussichtsreiche Touren auf Neuenalpstock, Lütispitz und Stöllen.
According to an old legend a treasure is still buried somewhere near Graeppelensee (1.307 m) an idyllic lake 500 m above Alt St.Johann. People who are not interested in treasure-digging can also use this place as an ideal starting point for hikes to Neuenalpstock, Luetispitz or Stoellen.

Auf dem Südgrat des Neuenalpspitz angekommen blickt man hinunter auf die Ortschaft Stein im Toggenburg.
Arrived on the south-ridge of Neuenalpspitz we are looking down to the village of Stein in the Toggenburg area.

Eine ähnliche Aussicht bieten die Nachbarn Lütispitz (rechts) und der felsige Gipfel des Stöllen dahinter. A similar view is obtained on the neighbouring summits of Luetispitz (right) and Stoellen (behind). |
Auf den ersten Blick scheinen die Felsnadeln des Stöllen kein sonderlich attraktives Ziel zu sein, zumal auch der Weg dahin oft weglos über Schrofen empor führt. Die Aussicht ist allerdings aller Ehren wert und reicht von den Glarner Alpen bis zum Zürichsee, und im Osten dem bereits bekannte Profil des Alpstein Hauptkammes mit Säntis, Altmann und Wildhuser Schafberg.
At first glance the rocks of Stoellen do not seem to be very attractive for hikers since even the path is sometimes missing or leads up grassy slopes. The view on the summit however is excellent. The panorama covers the Alps of Glarus up to Lake Zurich, up to the well known profile of the main part of the Alpstein massif with Saentis, Altmann and Wildhauser Schafberg.
