Hornindal

Grodås is the center of Hornindal municipality at the eastern end of Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Europe (514 m). Due to its central location it is an ideal starting point for daytrips to nearby destinations like the Sunnmøre mountains, Geiranger Fjord as well as the glaciers of Jostedalsbreen in the south.

We stayed in the Raftevolds Hotel in Grodås where we were lucky to get a room with a superb view across Lake Hornindal even as short term vacationers. Hornindalsvatnet, a so-called fjord lake is 13 miles long, 3 miles wide and filling a long glacially carved valley. Its lowest point lies 460 m below sea-level similar to quite a few lakes on the southern edge of the alps like Lago Maggiore (-79 m) or Lake Garda (-281 m).

The mountains around Grodås were still covered with snow. West of Mount Gjugra (1.297 m) a new tunnel of the E39 has been build between Volda and Ålesund.
