Zanskar: Pensi La - Sani Gompa

In Part 2 we are crossing the Pensi La pass (4.480m) with a spectacular view of the Durung Drung glacier. Following the Doda river, a tributary of the Zanskar river, we reached Sani Monastery showing some scenes of the Naropa festivities. The trekking from Parkachik to Sani near Padam is about 120 kms long.

Pit, our trekking guide, was taking care of blisters on the long way from Rangdum to Sani Gompa.

Having crossed the valley plain beyond Rangdung Gompa we set up our camp below the Pensi La pass.

Numerous peaks of about 6.000 m are visible in the side valleys.

The top of the pass and its lakes were reached soon after breakfast.

Durung Drung glacier south-east of Pensi La is one of the longest Himalayan glaciers with a length of 25 kms (see also satellite image). It is lined by the elegant twin peak of Z2 (6.270 m).

The Zanskarpas were always curious and very friendly. 'Jule, jule' means 'hallo' as well as 'bye, bye'. Perak is a headdress with semiprecious stones women are carrying on festive days. Traditionally horses were the best means of travel (at least in 1982).

After crossing the pass we all were lucky to arrive at our camp at Hameling in the early afternoon.

Our next camp was erected on the banks of the Doda river which flows in south-eastern direction to join the Zanskar river.

In the distant future mani stones might possibly be the last witnesses of a long disappeared culture:

Image 1: Tara the liberator from fears.
Image 2: Vajrapani who eliminates hindrances in meditation.
Image 3/4: Below the Mantra OM MANI PEME HUNG, which liberates beings from their illusion of the mental poisons like pride, jealousy, ego clinging, ignorance, greed and hatred.

Sani Gompa belongs to the transmission lineage of the Drukpa Kagyus - a school based on the great master Gampopa.

Gampopa was a follower of the yogi Milarepa whose teacher was Marpa the translator. Marpa had travelled across the Himalayas to India to meet his teacher Naropa and received the buddhist Mahamudra teachings. In the 11th century Naropa lived in Northern India and also stayed at Sani, meditating beneath a stupa built in the second century. To honour him, the Naro festival (Naro nasjal) is celebrated at Sani. The assembling hall of the monastery was built in the 17th century under the administration of Bardan monastary.
